Health plan total yearly cost calculator

Quick answer

Enter up to three plans from HealthCare.gov, your state Marketplace or an employer, plus the care you expect to use. We estimate each plan's total yearly cost (premiums after tax credits + expected out-of-pocket costs) and its worst case (premiums + out-of-pocket maximum). Everything runs in your browser. Example values are placeholders only, not real prices.

How the estimate works

  1. Premiums: (monthly premium − monthly tax credit) × 12, never below $0.
  2. Copays: visits × visit copay, plus fills × 12 × prescription copay.
  3. Other care: you pay up to the deductible, then your coinsurance percentage of the rest.
  4. Cap: copays plus cost-sharing can't exceed the out-of-pocket maximum.
  5. Worst case: yearly premiums + out-of-pocket maximum.

This is a simplified model for comparison only, not a quote. If a visit copay is 0, visits are counted as "other care" at an assumed $200 per visit so they go toward the deductible. Learn the method in how to compare total cost.

Estimates are for education only. PlanCost isn't an insurer or agent. Confirm costs in each plan's Summary of Benefits and Coverage before enrolling.

Frequently asked questions

How does the calculator estimate yearly cost?

It adds 12 months of premiums after your tax credit to an estimate of your out-of-pocket costs: visit and prescription copays plus your share of other care (deductible first, then coinsurance), capped at the out-of-pocket maximum. The worst case is yearly premiums plus the out-of-pocket maximum.

Is my information saved or sent anywhere?

No. All calculations run in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to PlanCost or anyone else.

Why might my real costs differ?

Real plans have service-specific rules, such as copays that apply before the deductible, drug tiers, separate deductibles and out-of-network charges. Check each plan's Summary of Benefits and Coverage for exact terms.
